Hello outdoor adventurers or want to be outdoors people. I’m Brandon Pitts, the creator and main contributor for Dirt Path Travels.
My love of the outdoors was sparked on the farms and pines in southern Georgia. Those years spent outdoors and exploring the countryside played a huge role in making me the man I am today.
I started this blog with the encouragement of my wife to encourage other families to get outside and enjoy life. We want you to have the same sense of freedom we have found from being outside. These days too many people spend all their time with their face glued to a screen. There is SOOOOOOO much more to life. Nothing against technology, but we all spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME in front of it.
I know you want to spend time outdoors with your family but maybe you are not sure how to get started. We can help.
Whether you want to picnic, hike, camp, bike, fish, ski, snowboard, or something else entirely. We’ve got you!
We want to help. (I say we, because while I do most of the writing, my articles are so much better due to my wife’s input.)
Our vision for this website is that it will become your go to resource for everything outdoors. It includes a plethora of camping advice, creative ideas, great recipes, detailed gear reviews, buying guides, and comprehensive how to guides. It does not matter if you are a wet behind the ears beginner or a seasoned pro, there is something here for everyone.
We are here to help you. If you have any questions, be sure to ask and we will get back to you.
Our Story
A little about me.
My early years were spent outside. I am a child of the seventies and eighties. This means when I came home from school my mom did not let me inside the house and encouraged me to stay outside. This usually meant I was gone and did not come inside until after dark.
The only time we were in the house before dark were the rainy days and that was the only time our Atari or later the Nintendo were ever turned on.
We spent our time riding our bikes all around town and out in the country. I can remember being miles away from home and realizing it would be after dark before I got back home. And in those days, we rode our bikes down the road with no lights or helmets all the way back home.
On other days we rode our bikes to the creek to go fishing or swimming. In hunting season, you would find us biking to a friend’s farm to hunt for squirrels or rabbits.
In other words, we were always outside.
I remember the first time I camped out with my best friend at the time, Ron. We set up a 2-person, red boy scout pup tent and spent the night in his backyard.
From there we progressed to camping in farm fields and beside ponds. We ran through the woods, climbed trees, set trot lines for catfish, caught bream, sat around the campfire, and told stories while cooking hotdogs and smores.
I remember those days fondly.
Unfortunately, after I finished college and started working, I spent less time outside.
After starting a family, I was talking to my wife about how I grew up and she wanted to go camping.
We bought a tent and some sleeping bags and off we went. One trip was all it took for my wife and 4 kids to be hooked. On our first trip my kids were 8, 6, 4, and 1 year old. They were all hooked, and the adventures began.
We camped in state parks, national parks, and on private land. Thanks to YouTube, we discovered bushcrafting and a new adventure began. This culminating is buying some land in the country and continuing to camp and to play in the woods.
I started this blog to encourage other families to get outside and enjoy life. There is so much more to life than spending time inside watching TV. Nothing against TV, but as a nation, we spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME in front of it.
